Florito "Ka Pogi" Crisostomo PDF Print E-mail
Written by Arlene Icasiano

He started his career defending and preserving peace and order in Tanay as a Law Enforcer, Ka Pogi, as he is fondly called, now found himself in a much deeper calling- equipping our local farmers with the knowledge of hybrid rice production technology, as he personally testifies to its efficiency. Florito “ Ka Pogi” Crisostomo was born on September 26, 1943 to the late Zacarias and Hermogena Custodio Crisostomo in Tanay, Rizal. He graduated in High School at the Sierra Madre Institute in 1960 and was called to service at the TANAY PNP Station in 1972, where he rendered service until his retirement in 1999.

His entry to the agricultural world came as abrupt yet called-for. When his father-in law, the late Mr. Benigno Piguing died, leaving a 30-year land tenancy behind.Though unprepared as he was, he took over, including the leadership of the Salang Matanda Farmer’s Cooperative; an organization his late father-in-law served for many years, and for which, he had served for four years. Presently, he is the President of the Salang Bata Farmers Cooperative.

Ka Pogi has so many reasons to celebrate these days. After undergoing arduous trainings at the University of Rizal System and other agricultural agencies, he was able to grasp on the modern method of Hybrid Rice Production. He initially applied the method in a one-hectare land and the rest is history. Presently, he is a record-holder for highest yield of 226 cavans of rice per hectare, gaining for him meritorious acknowledgements and recognitions from various agricultural organizations; he was the Department of Agriculture’s Outstanding Farmer of 2003, encompassing the clustered regions of the CALABARZON, MINAROPA, and the Bicol Region.

This initial success gave Ka Pogi a firm determination to help other local farmers through information dissemination and coordinating with the Department of Agriculture on incumbent projects like the Rice Demo Farm in Sitio Calbon, in Cuyambay. He also speaks before farmers on various workshop and seminars on the efficiency of the method. Although he admits that there is an underlying resistance from minority groups, he is still positive about it. Not that he completely turned his back to the traditional method; in fact he still abides with the basic principles he acquired from his predecessor; in fact, it is just a matter of upgrading skills to achieve higher productivity that really makes a difference.

Asked about his basic values in life, he aptly answered “ sakripisyo”- one has to sacrifice for the sake of a greater multitude. He also believes that “open communication” is the best way to maintain a common ground for understanding and unity especially among his core group, which has unfortunately been divided on this issue.

Incidentally, Ka Pogi has other reasons to be proud of - being married to a very supportive and equally- knowledgeable wife, Mrs. Iluminada Piguing and successful offspring- Winifreda, Josephine, Florito Jr., Jenylin, Florida and Anderson, who have all been working abroad, leaving some of their children to their grandparents care. “ Nag-aalaga na lang kami ng mga apo”, the couple beams proudly.

Aside from rice and “apos”, is there any room for more? Surely, as he excitedly announced his new baby- “organic vegetable farming” and pointed to his beautiful garden beside his house, immediately turning his attention from rice to vegetable, and again, the rest shall be another story!

Brief History of Tanay
