Tanay Town Plaza
Written by Alexander "Tuts" Calinawan

No town is complete without its own town plaza or park, a place where people gather to celebrate fiestas, to meet or just simply to sit on a bench on a lazy afternoon where there’s nothing much to do but to sit around and watch the day waste away gracefully.

Tanay’s own park is up for anything the community might need it for; its mere size is more than sufficient to facilitate any town celebration or meeting. It is located right in the middle of the town and across the church. It’s so much at the center of everything geographically that I’m certain that at one point in the day almost everyone passes by it.

Formerly where the Tanay market stood before it burnt down and was relocated to its present location and replaced by what is now Tanay Park. The former Plaza was but a small stage near the church, facing the street, where I assume when people gathered they would have probably had to close down the streets. That small stage still stands to this day and is still considered part of what is now a larger gathering place for the town’s folk of Tanay.

Tanay Park’s charm is in its simplicity; wire arches greet you at every entrance, it’s Clean and obviously well maintained that I even came across the cleaning crew. It has its own stage on one end, an open space for activities that I later learned where badminton is usually played, kids also practice riding their skateboards and bikes in the same space. Although I wasn’t lucky enough to see any of those said activities actually taking place right then and there, I could easily picture it in my mind. A few kids were playing with balloons just a few meters from where my bench was.

They had installed a new playground for the toddlers. A replica of Daranak falls can also be found at the corner of the park and at the center of the Plaza is an exact albeit much smaller replica of the infamous Luneta Park statue our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

Simple garden arrangements with trees and colorful vegetation fenced inside the park which is in turn also fenced in by trees, plenty of benches in and around the entire parameter of the plaza where I happened to see such classic sights taking place such as elderly folk mostly with canes engaging in conversation, young love blossoming, someone reading a newspaper, someone with their dog talking someone else that has their dog with them too and off course someone sleeping in one those benches. Sitting on one of these benches underneath the shade of a tree you could almost feel the entire town pass you by. They couldn’t have picked a better spot to call their plaza or town center than where it stands; it is a refreshing contrast from the surrounding commercial area it centers on.

My guide and I were sitting on a bench, both glad to have accomplished so much in a day, myself getting ready to head off for my commute back home and anxious to write about the day I spent in Tanay. Looking around one last time, at the people, at the church behind us, scanning thru the mental pictures I’ve taken of the places that we went to that was out of eyes sight from where we were, listening to the sounds, just trying to take in as much as I can one last time before I head home and seeing the mid-afternoon, already shifting blue to orange skies, I thought to myself, there couldn’t have been a more perfect way to end the day than in the park.

Brief History of Tanay

Long before the coming of the Spaniards, Tanay was already settled by early Indonesian and Malay voyagers. Artifacts dug up attest to the existence of these early settlements. Not long after the conquest and subjugation of Manila and the surrounding lake areas by Salcedo in 1571, Franciscan missionaries arrived to Christianize the inhabitants of what is now the Morong-Pililla area... read more
