Tanay abounds in interesting food stuff and its culinary repertoire is indicative of the diverse culture the place has, owing to its various cultural influences and geographic location. Daraitan River A remote paradise situated far end of Tanay awarded by the Department of Natural Resources as the “ cleanest body of water” in Region IV, Daraetan is poised to become one of the most important tourist destination in the future. The mighty rushing water creates melodious murmurings that blend in beautifully with the rustic and laidback ambience of its surrounding. Enliven by a healthy exchange of trades; from farmers coming in with their harvests, to the waiting jitneys ready to take them to the town market, and from tourists who visit to partake in its beauty. While the mountains presents an adventurous challenge to one who decides to explore its bounty, the river is also ideal for water trekking, swimming and rubber boating; warm and genuine hospitality radiates from the welcoming smile of its people.

PINANGAT NA AYUNGIN
Amazing, finger-sized fresh water fish boiled either in tamarind or guava and garnished with Jalapeno chili and other exotic herbs and spices. Served best when boiling hot, with a dip of local patis ( fish sauce) and siling labuyo.

GINATANG TILAPIA
A fresh water fish cooked in thick coconut milk, garnished with lots of Jalapeno chili and local vegetables. Best serve hot with local patis and hot chili.

BALAO-BALAO
Small fresh water shrimps cooked in thick coconut milk, hot chilies and other exotic spices. The oil from the coconut milk provides a distinct taste that fires up the appetite.

INIHAW NA DALAG/ HITO/ BANGUS
Fresh water fishes grilled in perfection. Best serve fresh from the grill, with a dip of patis, toyo (soy sauce), calamansi (lemon) and lots of hot chilies.

Owing to its distinct Hispanic influence, Tanay also boasts of various cooking which features an elegant array of meat and poultry menus that adorns every tables during special events like birthdays, weddings and fiestas. Among the favorites are:

PININYAHANG MANOK

Bite size chicken cooked in the sweet-sour taste of pineapple and milk. Served best with patis. The distinctive taste of pineapple gives a truly delectable after taste.

PAKSIW NA LITSON
Oven- baked pork head, chopped and cooked with the spicy, sweet blend of pork liver sauce, garnished with lots of spices and herbs. Its succulent taste leaves a sweet after taste in the mouth.

PORK ASADO
Inspired by its Chinese influence, cooked the Tanayan way, the dish carry a sweet taste, having cooked in pineapple brine and sweetened with sugar and spices.

MENUDO
A favorite menu during fiestas and other occasions, the dish carries a distinctive Hispanic taste; pork and pork liver cooked in a brew of tomato sauce, spices, potatoes and carrots.

AFRITADA
Another dish that carries both the elegance and taste distinctive of its Hispanic influence,
Either pork, beef or venison, sautéed in tomato sauce and peanut butter; garnished with hot chilies and spices.

Tanay also offers the most traditional yet delectable array of sweets and delicacies. Most are being cooked while waiting, providing a delightful and interesting sight to watch; Goes exquisitely well with a brew of Tekla Tea, coffee and chocolate.

PUTO BUMBONG

Mixture of rice flour steamed in bamboo and serve in neat banana leaves. This purple-colored delicacy is served with margarine, grated fresh coconut and sugar.

BIBINGKA
A mixture of rice batter cooked in native stone pan and cooked in charcoal stoves. This traditional pancake is being sold like ‘hotcakes’ in the sidestreets of Tanay especially during Christmas season; Sells in variety- with cheese or salted eggs as garnishings.

HOTCAKE SA DIKE
This local version of pancakes is a hit among the Tanayans who frequent the Dike during the early hour of the morning; This yellow colored pancakes are cooked in pans and serve with margarine and sugar.

SUMAN SA LIHIA
Glutinous rice marinated in wood ash lye, wrapped heavily in banana leaves and boiled
Till cooked to perfection; Served with grated coconut and sugar. The lye leaves a very pleasant taste and texture, which simply melts in the mouth.

SUMAN SA IBOS
This amazing delicacy carries an intricate design having been wrapped around in coconut leaves, and boiled in coconut milk. Best serve either with sugar or coconut jam.

SINUKMANI
Glutinous rice cooked in thick, to almost oily mixture of coconut milk and brown sugar. Usually placed in a bilao and cut in an artistic triangular cuts and sprinkled with coconut flakes.

GINUMIS
Rice balls cooked in thick coconut cream, garnished with nangka fruits and sago. The succulent taste of the Langka fruit leaves a pleasant smell and taste.

PUTO AT CUCHINTA
The famous duo steamed rice flour either plain or seasoned with lye. This rice cakes
Are endowed with simplicity and fits into any breakfast fares like Goto and Pancit.  Garnished with fresh grated coconut, cheese and butter, the cakes are heavenly and go so well with any hot or cold beverages.

BREAKFAST AT TEODULO Q. BERNADOS SR. PARK (DIKE)
remains to be the most pleasant experience for anyone who would prefer a good start in the day. After basking in the morning sun, a breakfast get-together would simply fill up the day, in the most favorite hanging place- the Azotea de Tanay. Among the favorite breakfast treats that provides refreshment especially after a rigid walk, jogging, aerobics exercise, are:

GOTO

Rice Porridge cooked with ox tripe; served with egg, or simply plain and goes so well with a dash of calamansi (lemon), toasted garlic flakes and garnished with spring onions
and lots of ground pepper that is surely to perk up the mood.

PANCIT PALABOK
Boiled rice noodles served with shrimp sauce and garnished with boiled eggs, tinapa (smoked fish flakes) and chicharon flakes. Topped with toasted garlic and seasoned with calamansi and patis. This goes so well with the favorite “puto” ( steamed rice cake)

PANSIT BIHON/ CANTON
Chinese rice noodles or egg noodles sautéed in pork, shrimp and vegetables like cabbage,
carrots and spring onions. Served with a dash of lemon.


WHERE TO EAT
Tanay has a rich culinary heritage derived from the various socio-political influences of its past; from a rich, spicy Hispanic taste to a simpler exotic Asian heritage. Evident in the various meal specialties offered in various native-style restaurants; each carries a distinctive character attached to it. Restaurants such as the Luntiang Tanay , Basnigan sa Kamalig, Kainan sa Tabing LawaTanayan Restaurant and the Halamanan carries a wide array of food specialties-from grilled to home cooked meals; live water fishes to exotic tapas, cooked the Tanayan way. Simpler “turo-turo” restaurants which offers ready-to-cook meals are almost everywhere. They are well known for their “binahog”, a local version of “ala-carte”. Modern fastfood restaurants such as Chowking and Jollibee are also available.

LUNTIANG TANAY

An exquisite and baroque garden environment that typifies a fishing village, suitable for private and romantic dinner. The place specializes in grilled seafoods and live water fish serve attractively in bilao.
